Season Finales
Where: Around the DMV
When: Throughout the weekend

This weekend is the last for some of the pursuits we’ve been enjoying all summer long — outdoor swimming pools and special museum programs among them. If you’re hoping to explore The Playhouse at the Building Museum, see the fairy houses at Annmarie Sculpture Garden, enjoy that last Cinematery of the summer, or jump in at an outdoor public pool, then get on it this weekend! For details on these and other seasonal activities that will continue for a few more weeks, check out the 2022 Summer Guide, which has details on all of these diversions, plus many more.

National Book Festival

Book enthusiasts young and old come from all over for the day of reading-related activities. Works by more than 100 authors, poets, and illustrators will be showcased, and the creators themselves will be at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for special appearances. It’s always a wonderful event, and I highly recommend going if you can.   It’s a good idea to plan ahead if there are any authors you really want to see, so take a look at the complete list of them as well as the schedule — most presentations are first come-first served, and people do line up early to get seats.

Virginia Scottish Games

Much of it will be showcased through competition, but there is plenty that all visitors can partake in, too. Two-day adult passes are available for $30.

Day Trippin’
Where: Around the DC area (and a bit beyond)
When: Throughout the weekend

The long weekend is a great time to head a little further out and enjoy a day trip. Some ideas for where to go:
* Zip up to Baltimore, where there are so many great attractions for families.
* See the spectacular underground world of Luray Caverns.
* Enjoy hiking and history at Harpers Ferry.
* Go to Calvert County for art adventures at Annmarie Sculpture Garden, a beach day at Calvert Cliffs State Park, maritime explorations at the Calvert Marine Museum, or even a pontoon boat excursion from Solomons Island.

Hike & Hang
Where: Around the DC Area
When: Throughout the Weekend
Admission: Varies by place

Sometimes it’s better to plan a hike around the apres hike destination, places where you can relax and enjoy food and drinks, the kids can play, and the scenery adds to the enjoyment. A few awesome combos for that, where you can hike and hang: Patuxent River State Park and Waredaca Brewery, Sky Meadows State Park and Barrel Oak Winery; Sugarloaf Mountain and The Comus Inn or Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard; Great Falls (MD side) and The Old Angler’s Inn; Patapsco Valley State Park and the Guinness Brewery.

National Cinema Day
Where: Movie theaters around the DC area
When: Saturday
Admission: $3

Saturday is National Cinema Day, and many theaters are celebrating with $3 tickets just for the day. See what’s playing and reserve your tickets before they sell out.

Merriment Galore

When: Saturday, Sunday, & Monday
Admission: $24/adults, $21/seniors, $12/7-15, free/6 & under

Besides the amazing variety of entertainment — jousting matches, cheeky comedy shows, juggling acts, Celtic music, and much more — walking among knights, maidens, pirates, and villagers in a 16th-century village as you chomp on turkey legs and down cups of mead is an interesting little jaunt back in time that any age can enjoy.

When: Sunday, 12-10pm

Walk your way through the streets of Adams Morgan — one street, anyway! Five Things: August 31, 2022

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden interviewing author Jacqueline Woodson at a past National Book Festival

1. The annual Library of Congress National Book Festival is this Saturday, September 3! The Festival runs 9am – 8pm, and doors open at 8:30am.  Admission to all of it is free, but books and more items will be for sale.

2. This Saturday, September 3, is also National Cinema Day, and many theaters are celebrating with $3 tickets just for that day. See what’s playing and reserve your tickets before they sell out.

3. I strongly suggest listening to yesterday’s episode of The Daily about the adolescent metal health crisis. (Today’s about the Parkland students four years later is very compelling, too.)

4. Some Labor Day sales to check out: Target, Backcountry, Tea Collection, Best Buy, Gap.

5. QUEEN. (A reminder/recommendation to watch tonight + read this essay if you haven’t yet.)

Five Things: August 25, 2022

1. We recently stopped in My Cake Theory on Capitol Hill for the first time to get a taste. Why we waited so long — it opened about a year ago — I don’t know, because… YUM! They introduced the area’s first build-your-own “flavors to frills” cupcake process, that lets you select your cupcake flavor, filling, frosting, and “frillings.” They also have pre-made cupcakes loaded with “frills” and offer custom cakes and catering as well.  The staff/service there are as sweet as the treats, too.  (Btw, I promise this mention is not sponsored in any way.)

2. Summer break is winding down as local kids get ready to head back to school (if they haven’t already).  If you want to savor the final days with some quintessential seasonal fun or a special activity,  check out the KFDC Guide to Summer Around the DC Area for ideas.

3. Some great picks from Eater DC in their round-up of 16 Excellent, Affordable Dining Options in the DC Area.

4. ARTIFCTS, the online service that helps you organize, preserve, and share special memories, is turning 1 tomorrow, August 26.  To celebrate, for that day only, they are offering 50% off all new memberships. Check it out and sign up!

5. Excellent recommendations for Reading, Watching, and Listening.

Huzzaaah! It’s Time for Ren Fest!

I won’t go into a long, rambling introduction about this one, because if you’ve been reading KFDC for any length of time longer than a year, you likely already know how I feel about the Maryland Renaissance Festival.

That it’s my hands-down very, VERY favorite annual event in the area.  That I’ve adored it since well before I  had kids.  That I love not just the fun and food and entertainment and amazing people watching it brings, but also that it celebrates eccentricity, welcomes the weird with open arms, and presents all its mirth and delight in an easy, free-flowing way.  If you want more specifics on all of that, just go here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, or here.  And if you want to enjoy a day of extraordinary fun , just go.

Logistics
The merriment begins this Saturday, August 27, and runs every weekend, rain or shine, through October 23 in the lovely 16th century-style hamlet of Revel Grove in Crownsville, MD. Hours are 10am – 7pm. Through September 11, admission is $24/adults, $21/seniors, $12/ages 7-15, free for ages 6 and under.  After that, ticket prices go up to $30/adults, $26/seniors, $15/ages 7-15, still free for 6 and under. Multi-day passes that offer a discount are also available. Like last year, tickets must be reserved in advance online. There are no day-of, in-person ticket sales.

Notable Dates
There are promos and special themes on many weekends. Here’s a quick list, and you can find more info here.
*  August 27-28: Children’s Weekend – FREE admission for ages 15 and under with adult
*  September 3-4: Romance Weekend — Special events for singles 21+ on 9/3 & partners can renew their commitments in a ceremony on 9/4
*  September 5: Seniors day — Free admission for all seniors age 62+
*  September 10-11: Celtic Celebration
*  September 11 & October 10: ASL Interpretation Days – Selected stage shows will be interpreted in ASL
*  September 17-18: Pirate Adventure Weekend
*  September 24 & 25: Myth & Magic Weekend
*  October 1 & 2: Shakespeare Weekend

KFDC Tips
*  Bring a stroller or carrier for little ones, as there is  a lot of walking. I recommend a stroller that rolls over rough terrain easily.
*  Get a map and schedule on your way in to help you navigate and plan your day, but I recommend not overthinking it; Ren Fest is best experienced with a “go with the flow” mindset.
*  If there’s a show you really want to see, get to the stage a few minutes ahead of time to get good seats, so the kids have a good view.
You might encounter less crowds on Sunday, when many folks are watching football.
*  Plan to spend on extras like food, games, and fun for kids — all reasonably priced, but it can add up.
*  Tickets can sell out, especially on beautiful fall days as the chances to go dwindle. Between that and the online sales only, you might want to reserve further in advance than usual.
*  Consider pros and cons to going at different times: Early in the season, crowds are smaller because it’s usually very hot, and the admission fee is lower. Later in the season, the cool, crisp weather and autumn foliage adds some extra splendor to the visit, but also draws the masses.
*  Let the kids dress up! Princesses, knights, fairies, and pirates will fit right in.
