Inside Info: Indoor Places Open During COVID

Social distancing indoors at the National Gallery of Art

More and more indoor places around the DC area are figuring out how to safely open their doors to visitors again. I’ve been to a couple of Smithsonian museums and felt very comfortable and safe with the extra measures taken for COVID — and was very happy to wander the galleries and enjoy art in person once again.  As weather gets colder and our itch for outings that aren’t outdoors grows, having some go-to indoor spots will be appreciated by many.  (But, of course, everyone should do what they’re comfortable with during this unusual and uncertain time!)  Here’s a handy list of them, and I’ll continually add to it as more places reopen.  Happy revisiting!

Five Things for Today: September 15, 2020

Smithsonian museums are starting to reopen… yeehaw!

1. Awesome news: Four Smithsonian museums are reopening this Friday, September 18!  The National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Renwick Gallery will all begin welcoming visitors again.  New safety measures are in place, and free timed-entry passes will be required for all but the Renwick (open Wed-Sun 10am-5:30pm) — reserve them through the links below.
National Museum of African American History & Culture (Wed-Sun, 11am-4pm)
National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum (Wed-Sun, 11:30am-7pm)

2. Today from 10-11am, join President Lincoln’s Cottage for their weekly Social Studies program. Reserve an outdoor table for your family and participate in an exploration of your own emotions through storytelling, hands-on activities, and reflection.  Follow the link to learn more! (PS: This also takes place tomorrow at 10am & 3pm, and Thursday at 10am.)

3. For all celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend… Because the unusual COVID circumstances keep us from gathering to welcome the Jewish new year, there will be many outdoor shofar soundings throughout the area. The Blast DC is asking people to blow the shofar from their locations around the city at 5pm on Friday, September 18. You can view a map on their website to see where they are happening — and one of them will be from the rooftop of the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue.  Chabad DC is also hosting one in Lincoln Park on Sunday, September 20, at 4pm — register for it for free here.

4.  25 shows worth watching this fall, according to a WaPo TV critic.

5. As delightful as it is impressive. (And there’s more.)

Five Things for Today: August 20, 2020

A peek into Ginkgo Gardens on Capitol Hill — a great place to purchase plants!

1. The gardens at Tudor Place in Georgetown have reopened. From 12-4pm Thursdays – Sundays, you can take a free self-guided tour through the 5 1/2 acres of flora with a reserved timed ticket entry. Tickets are for two hours of time, but you can reserve multiple slots for a longer visit.

2. The new National Children’s Museum was barely open a month before it closed due to COVID. But they’ve been providing online offerings for kids since then, including STEAMwork videos with cool experiments, virtual field trips, digital exhibits, a podcast, and more fun and educational activities to enjoy at home. Read a KFDC write-up about the museum from its brief pre-COVD days to see what you can look forward to when it’s accessible again.

3. The BlackStar Film Fest, an annual festival showcasing films by Black, Brown, and Indigenous people from around the world that usually takes place in Philadelphia is going digital this year. Starting today through August 26, view a variety of films, listen to panel discussions, and join more special events online. The schedule of events and “tickets” are available on the website.

4. An illustrated guide to house plants.  (Wow, didn’t realize so many are toxic to kids and pets!) And Real Simple has 5 things to consider before bringing a new plant home.

5. My, how they’ve grown!
