An oasis of Christmas magic awaits you at National Harbor’s Gaylord Resort & Convention Center. If you’ve never been, you’ve likely still heard of ICE!, the resort’s annual holiday season event boasting incredible, themed ice sculptures. But the ad on your social media feed doesn’t illustrate the extent of the elaborate, immersive experience, in addition to the world-class Christmas Village and overall holiday joy carried throughout the resort.
My family spent the night at Gaylord prior to attending the holiday events, and it may be our new tradition. We arrived at sundown when the magic is really at its best. The balcony to our room overlooked the entire atrium, aglow with a Christmas tree and twinkling lights overhead. The core memories being created were 1000% worth a night of sharing a room with two over-excited kids. We also spied the amazing Christmas Dream Suitesfrom our room.
The next morning, the Christmas Village and ICE! – themed around A Christmas Story – were officially open. Plan to start your experience with ICE! – an outdoor, tented exhibit space chilled to an unimaginable 9 degrees. Think ice bar or walk-in freezer if you’ve ever been in one, and bundle up in your warmest gear. Parkas are also provided but are not warm enough on their own, though cute for a family photo op.
No words can fully describe ICE! and the mind-blowing, multi-colored ice creations that a team of ice carvers from Harbin, China, are brought in to build. On your way in, there is a small display showing the process and tools used – try to pause and explain things to your kids beforehand – they may be too cold to chat in the exhibit. And if they have yet to see A Christmas Story, watch some of the classic scenes ahead of time to make it more meaningful as well.
Hopefully your kids aren’t too cold in ICE! to take advantage of the coolest (pun intended) ice slides ever. Otherwise, you should head directly to Snow Flow Mountain indoors and plan to park it there for awhile. This four-lane tubing slide does not mess around! The height requirement is 42” and it makes total sense once you see how fast the tubes careen down the slope. The smiles and laughter are priceless.
Next, we checked out Snow Factory, where you can build and toss real snowballs, but it wasn’t quite ready for our visit. Temporary disappointment until we saw the next stop was a visit with Santa – the real one according to my 5-year-old (I’m more discerning with my Santas). After the prerequisite photo-op, we spotted a gingerbread girl named “Cinnamon” and followed her to the Gingerbread Decorating Corner. My kids chose the pre-constructed houses over cookies.
On our way out of the Christmas Village, we said hi to Mrs. Claus, who leads 25-minute Christmas Traditions experiences featuring story readings, sing-a-longs, and cookies with milk. (Tickets must be purchased in advance.) We got bundled up to head back outdoors to the Ice Skating and Ice Bumper Cars area (but not really on ice), but my kids were a bit holidazed so we decided to call it a day – and a very memorable one at that.
Christmas at Gaylord National runs daily from November 20 – December 31. ICE! is back after a two-year hiatus, so expect it to be a popular event, especially on weekends. Tickets start at $25/child and $37/adult; ages 3 and under are free.
More Tips & Info * There are professional photo-ops at ICE! and with Santa. Be prepared to pay $25 per photo or take your own photos where photo-taking is allowed. * Have a place to store your cold weather gear after ICE! or make a run to your car to drop things off once you are settling indoors. *Cirque: Spirit of Christmas and The Greatest Story Stage Show begin November 25, both shown in the Gaylord National atrium. * Harbor Social is a super kid-friendly option for dinner at the resort. There are games everywhere, including duckpin bowling (call to reserve a lane in advance). * Stop by The Holiday Sweet Shoppe at the resort for some treats and nostalgia. *Holidays at National Harbor includes a nightly tree light show, as well as fireworks Saturday nights November 12 – December 17 at 5:30pm.

Downtown Holiday Market

This is, to me, the holiday market in DC. It’s not even so much about the merchandise for sale (though there’s always an excellent variety of gift items — I never leave empty handed). There’s something about the city block in the middle of Penn Quarter transforming into an open air market for a few weeks that is so charming and kind of magical. A bonus is the free live entertainment along with treats and coffee drinks available for purchase. And after you’ve done your shopping and enjoyed a snack and music, you can pop into the National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum that are literally right next to the market.

Twinkling lights forming enchanting displays are easily a holiday season favorite. A few opened last weekend, and several more are starting to welcome guests to their sparkling wonderlands. A few are listed in this round-up, and you can see other locations here. Some you can walk through for an up-close experience, others you tour by car. If you opt for the latter, dress the kids in PJ’s, turn up the holiday tunes, and bring along a thermos of hot chocolate. Either way, be prepared to be dazzled!
A Gem of an Event

Kids (and adults!) who like fossils, rocks, and/or gems are in for a treat. Northern Virginia’s 30th Annual Mineral, Gem, & Fossil show will have all that and then some. Around 20 dealers will be selling collectibles, plus there will be demonstrations, exhibits, door prizes & kids activities, including mini-mines and a fossil dig. This takes place in Dewberry Hall in the Johnson Center at George Mason University.
Kids Workshop

Lowes is hosting their monthly in-person workshop for kids. This Saturday, celebrate Thanksgiving in a unique way with your mini DIYer as you put together a Dancing Turkey Kit. You’ll leave with a hand-made toy that’s as fun to play with as it is to create. Be sure to register in advance before Saturday!
Skaters Gonna Skate

Glide the day away as several area outdoor ice rinks are welcoming skaters for the season. Meander your way around Canal Park Ice Rink. Skate in Georgetown at the Washington Harbour. Do some shopping and snacking along with your skating at Pentagon Row in Arlington. Practice your axles and triple lutzes at Reston Town Center. Or find another rink where you can skate under the sky (or stars) or indoors. This post has details on this season’s ice skating spots.
DC Holiday Lights

During the holiday season, Main Streets throughout the District are joining together to bring DC residents a spectacular holiday experience: DC Holiday Lights! Take a stroll down each of the participating corridors to experience a dazzling array of lights and decor, enjoy holiday promotions, and shop local. Garden of Lights

One of our faves, he Garden of Lights is a magical winter wonderland illuminated with more than one million dazzling colorful lights shaped into hand-crafted, original art forms of flowers, animals, and other natural elements. Stroll from garden to garden enjoying twinkling tree forms, sparkling fountains, and whimsical winter scenes — a few of them new this year. Afterwards, warm up inside the Visitors Center — sip hot cocoa and listen to one of the nightly musical performances. KFDC Tip: Go on a weekday if you can swing it to avoid crowds. Winter City Lights

New to the area this year, this magical holiday experience consists of one million twinkling lights spread across 18-acres of an outdoor winter wonderland where it is guaranteed to “snow” every night. The largest light show in the DC area and Baltimore area, Winter City Lights claims to be one of the most technologically advanced Christmas light experiences in the country. Complete with 14 bonfires, it includes an enchanted 1.5-mile long trail of Christmas lights and displays through the woods, a 52-foot high programmable Christmas lights tree and light show, a 200-foot diameter canopy of Christmas lights. There’s also an eight lane Snow Tubing Ride, s’mores, funnel cakes, and more!
Ice & Lights

Glide the evening away at Ice & Lights, The Winter Village at Cameron Run in Alexandria. The waterpark is transformed into a winter wonderland with an ice rink, beautifully lit photo ops, music, and more! Grab a slice of pizza, roast a marshmallow over the fire pits, and enjoy the winter village.
Holiday Tree Lighting

Tysons Corner Center will bring the community together to join Santa in kicking off their 2022 Holiday Season. Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade

Larger than life inflatable turkeys and penguins, glittering floats, marching bands, dancing groups, and Santa and his elves! The Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade is the only one of its kind in the metro DC area. Held in downtown Silver Spring, it traditionally heralds the start of the holiday season. The parade steps off from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and proceeds south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue.
Sensory Friendly Screening

Washington Waldorf School is bringing back its annual holiday market for the first time since 2019! For over 50 years, it has been offering one of the highest quality bazaars in the DC area with unique crafts and activities for children of all ages. Christmas Village

Head up to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for its annual Christmas Village, an authentic German holiday market, that is full of fun for all ages. There’s kids entertainment all day long, photo ops with Santa, a carousel and ferris wheel, live performances, and more! Plus, everyday there are more than 50 vendor booths to browse for gifts, food, entertainment, and lots of holiday fun to celebrate the season. S.P.I.E.S. 2: Flight of the Hawk

Signature’s Theatre’s show just opened… Escape into a fantastical fairytale adventure where dreams come true, but not free. A trove of storybook characters’ paths intertwine as they chase their deepest desires through an enchanted forest. However, once they receive their happily ever after, the unintended consequences of granted wishes unravel their worlds. Weaving a euphoric score with a darkly humorous book, Into the Woods is a sophisticated musical twist on beloved childhood fables. Running time is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes, including one intermission. Parents should use discretion about what is age appropriate for their children.

Shakespeare Theatre Company presents a unique version of the Bard’s classic… The course of true love never did run smooth, especially when the ON AIR sign is lit. Don’t let the cooler temps stop you from getting out. Bundle up and enjoy the sunshine with some time on the trail. Peep the last of autumn leaves, tramp in places with scenic views, hike and explore history at interesting locales, and enjoy a day of active fun. If you’re not feeling outdoorsy, you can still get a dose of the outside world in the comfort of the indoors at a nature center. There are several great ones around the area that offer cool exhibits, including live creatures. Buddie Ford Nature Center in Alexandria, Watkins in Upper Marlboro, Potomac Overlook in Arlington, Long Branch in Falls Church, and Brookside in Silver Spring all make for a great outing.
World Cup Celebration

Canstruction

It’s the kick-off of Canstruction, a nationwide program that aims to raise awareness about hunger through a design-build competition that benefits the Capital Area Food Bank with donations of canned goods. Teams from architecture and design firms from DC use their skills to build sculptures out of cans of food. You can watch them at work in the Great Hall (and plan to check out some exhibits, too — admission fee for that.) The nutritious shelf-stable food is donated to the Capital Area Food Bank for distribution to those in need after the event.

Free Parking

It’s a day off from school for most students and the last fee free day of the year for national parks, which means there’s no entrance fee where they usually charge to get in. Take advantage of complimentary admission and hit the trail at Great Falls, Prince William Forest, Harpers Ferry, Shenandoah; take a ride on Skyline Drive to see the mountains covered in autumn colors; or head up to Baltimore to explore Fort McHenry. And our own very local national park, Rock Creek, is always free. Find even more parks to visit here.
Celebration for Native Veterans

The National Museum of the American Indian is hosting this weekend-long celebration that includes the dedication of the National Native American Veterans Memorial on Friday (more here) along with more festivities for all ages on Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy performances by musical artists, a presentation of colors by the Native American Women Warriors, hands-on activities for all ages, films, and a veterans hospitality suite. Of course, the rest of the museum — particularly the imagiNATIONS activity space for kids — is wonderful to explore, too!
Mount Vernon Salutes Veterans

Special activities at George Washington’s former estate include a wreath laying ceremony, performances by the Harmony Heritage Singers and the United States Air Force Strings, music and history on the Bowling Green, and a chance to meet General Washington. Throughout the day, write a thank you letter to an active duty service member in the Vaughan Lobby. Honored guests are also invited to place a flower at Washington’s Tomb. Ready, Set, Stencil

Recommended for young artists ages 8-12, this workshop explores Artist Frank Stella’s Protractor Series. Many artists use stencils as tools in creating their artwork, and Stella used the protractor as a tool. A painting from this series, Flin-Flon VIII, is a part of the permanent collection now on view at the museum. Teaching artist Susan Hostetler will lead participants through a Stella-inspired workshop exploring and creating intriguing designs using a single tool, the protractor. No experience necessary, but participants should come prepared for a fun, colorful challenge! Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain onsite and explore the museum — read more about it in this KFDC post.
Tour the Memorials

Observe Veterans Day on the actual day or over the weekend by visiting the sites that honor those who have served. Make the rounds on the Mall at your leisure — the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial, and Korean War Memorial are all within easy walking distance. And while not on the National Mall, another obvious place for a Veterans Day Weekend outing (or a visit anytime) is Arlington Cemetery.

Want to glide under the sky? Several outdoor ice skating rinks in the area are welcoming guests to skate the day away. Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring, Rockville Town Square, Pentagon Row, and Reston Town Center are all open. Art on the Avenue

Rescheduled from October…celebrate the diversity of Alexandria’s Del Ray community at this multicultural arts festival. Numerous artists — jewelers, woodworkers, pottery makers, soap crafters, glass makers, painters, sculptors, fabric artists, and musicians — will have their work on display and for sale. And kids activities have always been a vital part of the festival — there will be crafts especially for young festival-goers to enjoy and take home. Food vendors will also be there offering hot dogs, BBQ, Indian fare, crab cakes, chocolate bananas dipped on a stick, and home made cider donuts.

One of my favorite KFDC Tips to impart because it’s one of my favorite places in DC: From November through mid-March, there is no fee to roam the beautiful, enchanting gardens at Dumbarton Oaks. Stroll among the various plats, find lovely tucked away places to sit, and get ready for delights as you turn every corner. Hours are limited, but you can make a longer day of it with play time at Montrose Park next door, a hike at Dumbarton Oaks Park right behind the gardens, or a bite to eat at one of of the many options in Georgetown. Bull Run Festival of Lights

The early in the season opening offers more opprotunity to experience the Festival’s 2.5 miles illuminated by holiday light displays. As you drive the festival route, turn off your headlights and just follow the magical glow. And what elevates this light display is the holiday village and carnival that’s included in admission. Even more, from November 11-20, save $10 with the promo code early22 — valid every day including weekends. And from November 21- December 15 save $5 by going Monday through Thursday with the code lights22.
Winter Walk of Lights

The Winter Walk of Lights start dazzling in mid November, as the beautiful garden is transformed into a half-mile, walk of lights in the evenings. Revisit perennial favorites such as the animated Lakeside Lights, the Fountain of Lights, and the Holiday Nature Walk – and look for new displays each year. Put on your walking shoes and bring the family to experience a Northern Virginia festive tradition. Round out your visit by roasting marshmallows and sipping on hot beverages by the fire. The college basketball season just started, and with so many universities in the area, there’s always some good hoops action going on — and it’s also a great time for families. Be sure to tour the big trees around the rest of the Arb while you’re there, too. It’s easily one of the best places in the city to do some leaf peeping. Weaving a euphoric score with a darkly humorous book, Into the Woods is a sophisticated musical twist on beloved childhood fables. National Harbor Nightly Tree Lighting

Watch the brand new 60-foot tree come to life nightly with a breathtaking light show in the heart of the Waterfront District. Saturday is the first tree lighting, and it will take place every evening after that through December 31. The show runs on the half an hour from sunset to 9pm. The Stars and Stripes Fair will also take place on the first night.

1. Have you been to the National Museum of the American Indian lately? This weekend will be a great time to go! On Veteran’s Day, this Friday, November 11, the NMAI is dedicating the National Native American Veterans Memorial, the first national landmark in DC to focus on the contributions of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians who have served in the military. Events begin at 2pm with a Native veterans procession that will begin at the museum then make its way along the National Mall (via Jefferson Drive SW, 3rd Street SW, and Madison Drive SW) to the dedication ceremony stage in front of the U.S. Capitol, which will begin at 4pm. Supporters can gather at viewing areas along the procession route. The museum also will be staying open until 8pm on Friday and hosting a full weekend of activities on Saturday and Sunday, November 12-13, in celebration of the event. so, keep the NMAI in mind for your weekend plans — festivals there are always lively with activities for all ages, not to mention the imagiNATIONS activity center is a fantastic space to hang out with kids!
2. The annual KFDC guide to the holiday season around DC was posted on Monday! You’ve likely already seen it, but check it out a again as there have been a few great additions, including Winter City Lights, a brand new area light display; holiday parties at the American Art Museum and DAR; and a holiday show in Annapolis.
3. If you haven’t yet experienced Yayoi Kusama’s One with Eternity at the Hirshhorn, it’s about to get a little easier to do so. Starting today at 12pm, free next-day passes to the exhibit will be released daily at noonon the Hirshhorn website. (Until now, passes have been distributed same day in person, making it tricky to plan,since getting them is not a guarantee.) And in case you hadn’t heard, the exhibit’s run has been extended though spring 2023!
4.This kids movie out on Netflix today sounds like a perfect watch ahead of the World Cup!
5. Something fun from the Washington Post (that might come in handy as election results roll in).
