Images of fresh produce may not be what you’d pair with mention of a Barbeque Battle, but when there’s a great giveaway hosted by a produce company that will be offering tastings of their products at the event, it makes perfect sense. Besides, a fresh salad is a perfect complement to a meaty barbeque dish!
The 25th Annual Giant National Capitol Barbeque Battle is returning to DC this weekend, June 24-25, for two days of food and fun for all ages. It’s one of the largest and most popular culinary festivals in the country, welcoming over 100,000 visitors each year to enjoy festivities ranging from cooking demos to live entertainment to celebrity appearances to food tastings and, of course, the competition to distinguish the best barbeque around.
BrightFarms will be among the booths in the Local Flavors Tent showcasing their products and offering samples of their fresh produce. The company uses sustainable greenhouse farming to supply grocery stores with fresh lettuce greens, tomatoes, and herbs year-round to meet the growing demand for local produce. Here in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area, they work solely with Giant grocery stores to deliver produce — farm to shelf within 24 hours — from their greenhouse facility located in Culpeper, VA. This conserves nutrients, keeping items fresh. Taste and freshness go hand-in-hand; fresher will taste better! And BrightFarms is not just proud to be local, but also non-GMO and pesticide-free.
If you plan on attending the Barbeque Battle, be sure to stop by the BrightFarms booth and mention KidFriendly DC — they will provide you with a package of their locally grown salad to take home! In the meantime, you can enter their giveaway below for a chance to win tickets to the event this weekend along with a other great prizes.
As for the rest of the Barbeque Battle, non-stop entertainment will include 30 bands on three stages, plus appearances from celebrity chefs, TV cooking personalities and cookbook authors, representatives from the Washington Wizards, Capitals, Mystics, Nationals, D.C. United and the Washington and Baltimore arena football teams, Valor and Brigade. Attendees can also enjoy return of the popular Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest and fan-favorite Joey Chestnut, who broke the world record by eating 73 and a half hotdogs in 10 minutes at last year’s event.
The 25th Annual Giant National Capitol Barbeque Battle takes place on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, between 3rd & 7th Streets. Hours are Saturday, June 24, 11am – 9pm and Sunday, June 25, 11am – 9pm. Tickets start at $12/adult for one-day admission ($20 for two-day), kids 12 and under are free.
