The first Christmas that my oldest was able to remember was the one just weeks after we had moved to Florida. He was a wreck that Santa wouldn’t be able to come because there was no snow. A coworker suggested we make “reindeer food” to persuade the reindeer to stop at our house. So on Christmas Eve, we mixed red glitter with Quaker Oats, sprinkled it in the yard and called it reindeer food. Overnight, birds and squirrels gobbled up the oats, leaving just the glitter on the grass. My son woke up thrilled to see that the reindeer stopped and enjoyed a snack), and now our younger sons enjoy the tradition too in DC. It’s something we’ve been able to do wherever we live…and let’s the kids get excited even if it’s not a white Christmas.
