I’m excited to announce that KidFriendly DC is an official blog ambassador for Partners in Preservation, a community-based initiative by American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to raise awareness of the importance of historic places.
Twenty-four historic sites in the Washington, DC, area have been chosen to compete for $1 million in grant funding. Beginning today through May 10, Partners in Preservation invites the public to visit www.partnersinpreservation.com to help their favorite historic place earn points by voting online and via mobile. You can also post on Facebook, share with friends via Twitter, check in on Foursquare, and capture images using Instagram.
The historic place that receives the most points is guaranteed full funding of their preservation project. Each place has a different need in mind — basic maintenance, renovation, site expansion, you name it. You can view the full list of them here.
KidFriendly DC will be focusing on Mount Vernon, a popular attraction for families and a great place to show the kids some history while enjoying a fun outing. The “Father of Our Country” George Washington’s estate is the first President’s example of character and leadership is timeless, and his estate reflects the personality and talents most consistently revered in American history. The large dining room, in need of major restoration, welcomes over one million annual visitors and is a shining example of historic preservation that can inspire history lovers of all ages.
As DC’s first-ever citywide grassroots preservation effort, the call-to-action program is enlisting the aid of all Washingtonians to vote online for the preservation projects most important to them.
Here’s how you can get involved:
– Learn more about the sites and VOTE ONLINE DAILY
– Post about the sites on Facebook, check in to them on Foursquare, Tweet and Instagram using #PreserveDMV to earn more points.
– Head out to Farragut Square this Friday for Free Preservation Popsicles and to “meet” the sites.
– Visit the sites! Open House Weekend on May 4th and 5th will be a great time to really interact with some of the DC’s best historic gems.
