Still head-banging on Broadway, "School of Rock" is ready to raise the roof at The National Theatre in DC. This "New York Times" Critics' Pick was adapted from the 2003 film that launched Jack Black as a full-blown star, and just happens to feature 14 new songs from the King of the Musical, none other than Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. All the original tunes from the film are included too, and "Entertainment Weekly" called this stage version "an inspiring jolt of energy, joy and mad skillz." The show follows Dewey Finn, who was kicked out of his band and is struggling to make ends meet when he finds himself in the most unlikely of jobs -- teaching at a prestigious prep school. When he discovers his students' talent for classical music, he decides to steer them over to rock 'n' roll, turning this class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, mind-blowing, kick-ass band. Awesomeness ensues. [less-]

Playwright-performer Keith Hamilton Cobb, directed by Drama Desk nominee Kim Weild, uses his love of language and 30 years of experience in the American theatre to explore Shakespeare, race and America, not necessarily in that order. His 85-minute award-winning play, "American Moor," that considers the dilemma of a seasoned African-American thespian auditioning for a role fraught with racial animus, Othello, is an unapologetic peer into a hindering industry irony that stands as metaphor for our most pressing societal condition: a white culture dictating rules of conduct to a non-white one from an often inadvertent place of privilege. Cobb, with a facility for poetry entertains, and with the pathos of a veteran tragedian engages while asking questions that demand answers, and answering questions that too seldom get asked. [less-]

What if Shakespeare hadn't written "Macbeth" in 1605 and instead wrote about the foiled Gunpowder Plot, where conspirators attempted to blow up the King and Parliament? Bill Cain's playful and witty comedy poses the question and explores the moral obligation of artists to resist the manipulations of those in power. The sovereign has commissioned a play on the plot, but as Shakespeare and the King's Men acting troupe investigate the story they discover that the King’s version might, in fact, be a cover-up. Do they speak truth to power -- and perhaps lose their heads? Or take the money and lie? Or a third option -- equivocation? Find out at the Silver Spring Stage. [less-]

"Xuanzang's Pilgrimage", China's first traditional concert drama performed by the China National Traditional Orchestra, comes to The Kennedy Center Opera House in D.C. The piece tells the true-life story of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang (602-664), who travelled the length of the Silk Road across China on a 17-year pilgrimage to India. Xuanzang documented his experiences of the differences within Buddhism that he encountered along the way. His 17-year journey was driven by his desire to discover religious texts that had not yet come from India to China. His story is brought to life with an 80-piece traditional Chinese orchestra, 24 performers and strikingly elaborate costumes. "Xuanzang's Pilgrimage" is part of Image China, a high-level cultural exchange program presented by China Arts and Entertainment Group that introduces traditional and contemporary Chinese performing arts to audiences around the world.
