Five Things for Today: February 25, 2021

In the woods at Rock Creek Park

1. Something I realized yesterday as I was looking back at early KFDC days…for some strange reason, I didn’t start including images in my posts until a few months into it.  The first one that actually had a lead photo was Walks in the Woods about good local hikes with kids.  It’s been added to over the years — with both new places and pics — and it’s perfect to feature on another lovely, 50-degree winter day.

2. There are only a few days left of Black History Month, so check out these ways to celebrate it — several that take place outdoors, so you can enjoy the sunshine and social distance. Of course, you can partake in just about all of the activities beyond February.

3. If you need justification to buy that expensive item of clothing you’ve been eyeing forever, give this article about cost-per-wear a read.

4. Take a virtual vacay. (FYI, the City Guesser option is really fun and addicting!)

5. Good advice 😉

Five Things for Today: February 24, 2021

Searching for prehistoric remains in Calvert County

1. KidFriendly DC is 11 today! Thus, I’m highlighting one of my very favorite adventures around the area, not to mention it’s a great day for fossil hunting.  The linked round-up has details on several great places to search for shark teeth and other millions-of-years-old remains of marine creatures within an hour or so drive from DC.  Just note that at least one, Flag Ponds, is not open mid-week.

2. I’ve been seeing ads for Masterclass for awhile, but didn’t know much about it.  A friend just signed up for it, and said it’s fantastic.  You have access to all kinds of online classes taught by, well, masters — Middle Eastern Cooking with Ottolenghi, Scientific Thinking with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Songwriting with Alicia Keys, Ukele with Jake Shimabukuro, Writing with David Sedaris are a few examples.  My friend’s kids loved a magic class and one about how to become an astronaut, and her husband took one on the art of negotiation.  It’s $3.45/week ($180/year) for unlimited access, which sounds like a good deal.   Does anyone else subscribe and have more insight?

3. The Daily did a really good episode on Children and Covid last week that discusses when kids will get the vaccine.

4. A heartwarming story out of Texas.

5.  A beautiful essay on befriending former selves.

Five Things for Today: February 23, 2021

Enjoying a beautiful day at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve

1. Because temps are going to reach the 50s today (and tomorrow!), plus after the wintry mixed weather we’ve been having, it’s a great time to (re)share the big round-up of outdoor adventures around the area with kids.  Enjoy the sunshine!

2. The Lane Social Club is offering Open Play sessions again on weekends. Safety protocols for Covid are in place, and only a limited number of spots are available during sessions.  Admission is $15 per person over the age of 1 (that includes adults).

3.  In case you missed it, yesterday’s ceremony honoring 500,000 Americans lost to Covid was powerful and poignant.

4. This new podcast just launched yesterday, and it’s a great listen so far.

5. My first IG reel if you want to check it out.

Five Things for Today: February 22, 2021

Always fun to catch a glimpse of Hahn/Cock on the roof of of the National Gallery of Art

1. Artful Conversations, the National Gallery of Art’s monthly family program is back with a new session that introduces kids to works in the museum’s collection in fun, unique ways.  During this Sensory Sketching hour, participants will activate the five senses by sketching from observation while using their favorite kitchen spice! It begins at 4pm and is recommended for ages 7-12. Register here(FYI:  This also takes place on Wednesday, Feb 24, at 4pm.) See more about the museum here

2. I just learned that the Museum of the Bible is open from a friend who went there this past weekend.  I don’t know much about the museum, as we haven’t visited. (Full disclosure: I’ve never been super keen on going because of the Hobby Lobby ties and smuggling scandal.) But I’ve heard the exhibits are interesting and the building beautiful.  Hours are Thursday – Monday, 10am – 5pm.  Admission is $19.99/adult, $9.99/child online and $24.99/adult, $14.99/child walk-up, free for ages 6 and under.

3. How herd immunity works.

4. Currently reading Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips, and it’s very intriguing and well written.

5.  Salud! 🍹
