Tuesday – Take a trip back in time as you explore the historic Santa María, a faithful replica of the Spanish galleons used in the time of Columbus, docking at The Wharf’s Market Pier through Sunday, November 17 (closed 11/14). Tours are offered 10am – 6pm, admission is $5/child, $10/adult, or $25/family (up to 5).
Wednesday – Jet out to the Dulles area to discover Air & Space beyond the National Mall at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Chantilly arm of the museum. Showcasing even more fascinating artifacts of flight, you can see all kinds of air and space crafts, pretend to pilot in a flight simulator, get hands-on in a discovery station, and much more. Hours are 10am – 5:30pm. Admission is free, but parking is $15.
Thursday – Check out your local library. Drop in for story time, sing-a-longs, arts & crafts, and other activities, or just go to browse for books. See this post from the very early KFDC days for a little background and quick links to libraries around the area. Hours vary by location, admission is free.
Friday – Head to the National Zoo to say goodbye to Bei Bei. The beloved giant panda will be moving to China soon, and there are special events and activities at the zoo to help wish him a fond farewell. Write a postcard with your well-wishes for Bei Bei, watch zoo staff give him special Smithsonian-themed enrichment and treats, and join a Q&A with a keeper. Of course, visit even more animals while you’re there. Zoo grounds are open 8am – 5pm, exhibit buildings 9am – 4pm, and Bei Bei events are 9am – 2pm. Admission is free. (Note: These special activities for Bei Bei are happening November 11-18.
