Tuesday – Take kiddos to bounce, climb, swing, tumble, and slide at the PG Sports & Learning Complex Gymnastics Center in Landover, MD. The hour-long weekly open play workshop is a great way for kiddos to be active indoors (it was a regular outing for us when the kids were younger)! The session begins at 11:30am, and admission is $7/child. This also takes place on Wednesdays at 11:30am and Fridays at 4:30pm.
Wednesday – Get a little nature fix, indoors and out, at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington. Peek inside terrariums for a close look at snakes, turtles, frogs, and toads, and see fish swim in a small indoor pond. Continue your viewing outdoors at a larger pond and hike the nearby trails to enjoy the fall foliage. Hours are 10am – 5pm (Tuesday – Saturday, 1-5pm Sunday), and admission is free. Read more about the nature center here.
Thursday – Enjoy a musical morning with Boogie Babes at Eastern Market! King Bullfrog is the featured entertainer, and he’ll be playing tunes that kids really dig (and parents enjoy, too). The fun starts at 10:30am, and admission is $6/child, free for siblings 6 months and under. Plan on lunch after the show — there are lots of options at the market or nearby for a tasty bite.
In the evening, head to the Library of Congress for “Star Wars Under the Stars.” For three days, they’re screening the original trilogy episodes of the blockbuster series. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope will be shown at 7:30pm on the North Lawn of the Jefferson Building. Go early — characters from the film be available for photo ops beforehand starting at 6:30pm. Admission is free. (Update: This will now take place inside the building!)
Friday – Go apple picking at Waters Orchard. The locale in Gaithersburg, MD, is a great place to PYO, with lovely scenery and lots of varieties of the fall fruit. Hours are 12-5pm on Fridays (9am – 5pm Saturday & Sunday). Pricing is by the peck — $15/half peck, $22/peck, $38/bushel and that includes entry fee for two ($5/guest after that).
